Elan Valley, Wales, Painting

View of Elan Valley, Wales

This is a 9 x 12 inch oil painting of a view along the river in the Elan Valley, Wales. I used a pallet knife on canvas. The subject was painted from a photograph I took while visiting the area.

30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge for January 2014

Starting tomorrow I will be participating in the 30 Paintings challenge. I usually take a long time to do a piece of art so I can't imagine why I will be able to do this. However, it doesn't hurt to try.
I will be posting my daily (I hope) painting here every evening. Do come back and check out what I have done.

Now I have to find 30 photos of things I want to paint....

Beach Near La Push, WA

I started this little painting on the beach just down the road from La Push but, after almost 2 hours in the sun, with no shade in sight, I packed it in and finished it in my studio when I got home.

The painting is 8 by 10 inches, oil on gesso board.

Uncle Johnny

I painted Uncle Johnny about 15 years ago from a photo taken in the 1960s. He was my Grandmother's younger brother. He was a dairy farmer in Meshoppen, Pennsylvania. His fields and barn are in the background.
The painting is oil on canvas, 18 X 24 inches. It was the first portrait I ever painted.

Grassy Waters Preserve II

This is the second en plein air painting I did at Grassy Waters. The distraction de jour was an alligator who insisted on hanging out on my side of of the water. It was on the bank about 60 yards from me just chillin'. The painting is an oil on 8 by 10 inch cotton canvas board.

Grassy Waters Preserve I

The first of two en plein air oil paintings I did at the Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach, Florida. It's on an 8 by 10 inch canvas board. This is a great little preserve; there is a resident pair of endangered Everglades Snail Kites living here.

The Seine at Night

This oil was painted from a photo of the Seine which I took from the Pont Neuf (the New Bridge) which was built in the early 1600s. It shows the view down stream toward the Eiffel Tower. This is an oil on canvas measuring 18 by 24 inches.

Plein Air Oil Painting

This was done at Tanglewood Preserve, a nice little park about 15 minutes from my house. It's my first real plein air painting and I don't think it turned out too badly. It's oil on an 11" by 14" cotton canvas board.

Bistro Near Montmartre

Yesterday I finished this painting of a little bistro near the bottom of Montmartre, Paris. I painted it from a photo I took in the Autumn of 2003. They make a very nice omelet and the vin ordinaire was quite decent. The painting is oil on cotton canvas and measures 14 by 18 inches (35.6 by 45.7cm).

Wine Caps Mushrooms

This is an oil painting on canvas that I finished several weeks ago. The subject is a trio of Stropharia rugosoannulata, common name Wine Caps. The models ended up in a risotto and were accompanied by a red wine. The painting is 9 X 12 inches.

Works in Progress

The pastel of The Garden at Lion Hill which was introduced in last week's post is shown here on the right.
Below is a picture of how it looks now after another couple of hours of work. I'm not the fastest artist in the world but it's almost finished.

This is the start of a oil painting of three mushrooms (Stropharia rugosoannulata) that I found in the woods here on Long Island. After I took the picture which I'm using as a model, I picked and sauteed them with olive oil, butter, basil and red onion. Mmmmmm....

Umbria, Italy - Oil Painting

This is the first oil painting I've done in over 35 years. The subject are fields in Umbria, a region of Italy just east of Tuscany. The strange color of the soil is due to its volcanic origins. I painted it from a photograph that I took along the road.
It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see.
