Sandy Aftermath
Can it get worse? Yes. We could have a Nor'easter.
With thousands still without power, the temperature has dropped to 30°, and it snowed. We have a tad over three inches here in Valley Stream. Over half of the trees around here have their leaves and, most of those, are still green.
I took both of these photos from my front door around 9 PM.

Sandy Aftermath
These pictures were also taken within two miles of my house.
A teen-ager remarked to me, upon seeing the pileup of boats in Hewlett Neck, "You know you're rich when you wake up in the morning and find three yachts on your front lawn."

Sandy Aftermath
We got our internet connection back around 5:30 PM today. It disappeared Monday around 6:30 PM. We lost power for only 20 hours also so we were very lucky. Paul had the bright idea of turning the heat up very high before the Sandy struck so, when the power was lost and the furnace cut out, we had enough heat to carry us over until the power came back, even though the temperature in the house fell 10 degrees.
We lost about 40 to 60 shingles from the roof. The roofer is coming tomorrow afternoon to replace them.
About half of the damage - more on the other side of the peak. |
Below are some pictures from around the neighborhood. These were all taken within two miles of my house. I'll have more pictures tomorrow.

Four blocks from my house a nice old oak tree was toppled. |

The Upper Estuary Near Porthmadog, Wales
My new pastel on 12 by 18 inches Wallis sanded paper using Pan Pastels with a bit of Unison, Henri Roche and Derwent Pastel pencils. This was drawn from a photograph I took from a window of the narrow gauge train that runs from Porthmadog on the coast to the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Motorcycle As Art
I saw this in a gallery in Key West, Florida, many years ago. I don't ride motorcycles myself and I'm not too fond of the noise they make. One could honestly say I'm not a fan but, even I knew, this one is special.

Sidney
Sidney is a Jack Russell who lives in Pennsylvania. Her humans are cousins of mine. I don't believe it's necessary to mention who runs the house. These are recent pictures of her in her garden.
Sidney would like to remind everyone that they should always stop and smell the flowers.

Beach Near La Push, WA
I started this little painting on the beach just down the road from La Push but, after almost 2 hours in the sun, with no shade in sight, I packed it in and finished it in my studio when I got home.
The painting is 8 by 10 inches, oil on gesso board.

Uncle Johnny
I painted Uncle Johnny about 15 years ago from a photo taken in the 1960s. He was my Grandmother's younger brother. He was a dairy farmer in Meshoppen, Pennsylvania. His fields and barn are in the background.
The painting is oil on canvas, 18 X 24 inches. It was the first portrait I ever painted.

Watercolors
Below are three watercolors in various stages that I painted in February and March of this year. The top one shows the initial ink sketch before any color is applied. Sometimes I do just the sketch at the scene and then paint in the color later in the studio.
