30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge for January 2014

Starting tomorrow I will be participating in the 30 Paintings challenge. I usually take a long time to do a piece of art so I can't imagine why I will be able to do this. However, it doesn't hurt to try.
I will be posting my daily (I hope) painting here every evening. Do come back and check out what I have done.

In Progress

Started this pastel of the Middle Fork Flathead River in Glacier National Park. I thought it was done but after staring at it for a while I realized there were some glaring errors.

I'm also working on a looped yarn scarf, It's relatively easy to make but time consuming. 

You may be wondering about the rug - I'm cutting stripes but expect to start weaving tomorrow. I'll get a picture up as soon as I can.

The Upper Estuary Near Porthmadog, Wales

My new pastel on 12 by 18 inches Wallis sanded paper using Pan Pastels with a bit of Unison, Henri Roche and Derwent Pastel pencils. This was drawn from a photograph I took from a window of the narrow gauge train that runs from Porthmadog on the coast to the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog.

Julia - a new Portrait

I finished this portrait of my Grandniece on July 3rd. It's pastels on sanded 9 by 12 inch Colorfix paper. This was drawn from a photo taken when Julia was about 16 months old.

Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds

I just finished this pastel this week. I used a photo I had taken while we walking along a path named the Warden's Way. The section we traveled ran from Upper Slaughter, through Lower Slaughter, and then to Burton on the Water. The picture was done on Wallis sanded paper using mostly Pan Pastels with some Nu-Pastels, and touches of Unison and Rembrandt. The size is 12 by 18 inches.

Lisbon - View from the Tagus River

Lisboa

I finished this pastel yesterday. It was painted from a photo I took while crossing the Tagus River on the ferry. I had taken the train from Albufeira to Lisbon. The ticket included the ferry because there was no railroad bridge across the river.

The pastel is 12" X 18" on Wallis sanded paper. I used Pan Pastels, Nu-Pastels,  Rembrandt, and Unison pastels plus Derwent pastel pencils.

New Zealand, South Island - SOLD

I just finished this pastel today. I used Pan Pastels with just a touch of Derwent pastel pencil on 9 x 12 inch Colourfix sanded paper. It was drawn from a photo I took when I was in New Zealand in 2001.

Pastel "Ruined Monastery in Portugal"

I just finished this  9 x 12 inch pastel of ruins I photographed in Portugal. I used Pan Pastels on sanded Color-fix paper.

Arcadia National Park, New Pastels

 I finished these 2 small pastels this week. Both depict the shore at Arcadia National Park from photos I took many years ago.  Both are about 4 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches, done on ColorFix sanded paper.

Two Views of the New Zealand Mackenzie District

I finished both of these impressionistic pastels this week. They are small: 4 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches. I did both of them on sanded ColorFix paper. The first is up for sale at my Etsy shop. I'll put the other up by the weekend.

Looking Up the Glen

I used pastel board (a fairly new product) and soft pastels to create this picture of the view up Watkins Glen. I copied a photo I took one August several years ago. The glen is located near the south end of Seneca Lake, one of the New York State Finger Lakes.

Milford Sound

I was lucky enough to be able to go to New Zealand in January of 2001. I recently did this pastel from one of the photographs I took at Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park on the South Island. The picture was taken from the head of the fjord. If you have to chance to visit, do yourself a favor and go.

Milford Sound was created with soft pastels on sanded paper. The finished size is 9" by 12".

Harvest

I won a Newcomers Award for this pastel still-life, "Harvest", at the Village Art Club Autumn 2010 Exhibition. It's 9 x 12 inches and was done on Colorfix Paper using mostly soft pastels.

Hawaiian Rooster

I just finished this little rooster yesterday. I used a photograph I had taken on Kaua'i for my model. There are a great many feral chickens on the island and they come looking for crumbs just like the pigeons do here on the mainland.

The drawing is 8" X 8" on La Carte Pastel paper by Sennelier. I am keeping the original because Paul likes it but I'm selling digital prints in my shop on Etsy.

Welsh Meadow

I just finished this pastel of sheep grazing in a meadow in central Wales. My model was a photograph which I had taken while on vacation. We had rented a self-catering cottage on a farm north of the town of Rhayadar and stayed there for a week in 1999.

The picture is 9 by 12 inches on Canson Pastel paper.

A Farm in Winter

I did this pastel of a farm in upstate New York this past week. I thought a Winter scene would be appropriate since we are right in the middle of a heat wave.

The picture was done with soft pastels on pale blue 9 by 11 inch Canson pastel paper.

I did this  9 X 12 inch pastel on sanded paper. The subject was in a photo I took several years ago in New Jersey.
